• The following information will guide you through the data collection procedure for the Smoking Project.

Setting Up the Phone

  • Make sure the CollectData Application is installed on the Android phone
  • The application reads the Wockets Details from an xml file in a directory "/wockets/" from the external storage of the phone
  • For one set of wockets one xml file, SensorData_1.xml is required
  • For two sets of wockets two xml files, SensorData_1.xml and SensorData_2.xml are required. The application reads the SensorData_1.xml file as the "Green Set" and SensorData_2.xml as the "Red Set"
  • You can see a sample SensorData xml file
  • The MacAddress of each of the receivers in the file need to be replaced with the MacAddresses of the wockets being used
  • The number of receivers and decoders in the file should equal to the number of Wockets(Sensors) being used
  • The Receiver ID and Decoder ID for each receiver and decoder should be equal to the corresponding Sensor ID
  • Make sure these files exist in the proper location on the external memory of the phone


Setting Up the Annotator Tablet

  • Make sure the Annotator application is installed on the Android Tablet
  • The application reads the annotation labels from an xml file in a directory "/wockets/" from the external storage of the tablet
  • The file is named ActivityLabelsRealtime.xml
  • The xml file has four mutually exclusive categories, Activity, Posture, Smoking and Puff
  • You can see a sample ActivityLabelsRealtime.xml file here
  • Make sure this file exists in the proper location on the external memory of the tablet before running the annotator application

Day Before Data Collection

  • Make sure all devices(Android Mobile Phone and Tablet PC) have the required softwares installed and setup correctly
  • Make sure the wockets are charged for at least 5 hours prior to beginning data collection
  • Make sure the Android Mobile Phone is fully charged
  • Make sure the Tablet PC is fully charged
  • Make sure the Actigraph is fully charged


Day Of Data Collection


  • Check the settings of the phone
    • Go to Settings --> Display --> Screen timeout
    • Check 1 minute as the screen timeout





  • Check the TimeZone of the phone
    • Go to Settings --> Date and Time
    • Make sure Automatic is unchecked
    • Select appropriate timezone by clicking on Select time zone

  • Initialize the Actigraph
    • Plug GT3X into the com port and click on ActiLife icon
    • You should see the following screen once the program recognizes the Actigraph

    • Click Initialize Device, which will open a new window

    • Select Sample Rate : 40 hz
    • Select Start Date and Start Time as the date and time of beginning the data collection
    • Make sure Use Stop Time is unchecked
    • Click on Enter Subject Info which will open a new window

    • Enter the subject details and the location where the actigraph will be placed on the subjects body
    • Click on Initialize All
    • Once the the software has finished initializing, remove device from the port
    • Repeat these steps for each actigraph that is being used



Sensor Placement
  • Put all the sensors on the subjects body
  • The actigraphs and wockets should be aligned such that their orientations coincide as shown below:

  • Once all the sensors are placed on the subjects body, perform manual sync marker
    • Stand with arms and legs totally still for 10 seconds
    • Run in place very quickly for 10 seconds
    • Stand with arms and legs totally still for 10 seconds

Sensor Connection
FOR PHONE
  • Go to Applications on the Android phone and run the CollectData application
  • You will see a screen as shown below

  • Select the Wockets Set for the data collection session and Click on OK
  • You will see a message saying "Starting Data Collection" as shown below

  • The phone will connect to the wockets, and once connected, you will see a graph for each of the wockets on the screen as shown below

  • Hit the "Home" or "Back" button to minimize the app
  • The application will continue to collect data

FOR TABLET (Annotations)

  • Go to Applications on the Android Tablet and run the Annotator application
  • Click on the Menu key
  • Click on New Session
  • Enter the Subject ID --> Click OK
  • This will start the Annotator for the current data collection session


Information about the Annotator:
  • Each category is displayed with a different color
  • The first category denotes smoking or not smoking
  • The second category denotes the posture
  • The third category denotes the activities
  • The fourth category denotes puffing or not puffing of the cigarette
  • When selected, the button will be green. When unselected it will return to its previous color

Sensor Swap
  • If you need to swap the wockets set during data collection, click the Menu button

  • Click on Swap
  • You will get a confirmation window asking if you want to swap the wockets
  • Click on Yes if you want to continue with the swap. Otherwise click on No

  • This will restart the application, and you can then select the Wocket Set for the data collection


Equipment Removal


  • Unlock the phone
  • Perform manual sync marker
      • Stand with arms and legs totally still for 10 seconds
      • Run in place very quickly for 10 seconds
      • Stand with arms and legs totally still for 10 seconds
  • Start the CollectData application if it is not already present on the screen
  • Click on the Menu button

  • Click on Quit
  • You will see a confirmation window asking if you want to quit the application

  • Click Yes to quit the application and end the Data Collection session, otherwise click No to continue
  • Once the application is terminated proceed to remove the equipment from subjects body


Subject Sendoff
  • You can now sendoff the subject



Download Data
Wockets
  • Create a new folder on your computer with the following naming convention:[Subject#][subject session][mon(3)][day(2)][year(2)] eg: 0013v1Mar2411 for 24th March 2011 session 1 Subject 0013
  • Connect the Android to your computer with the supplied USB cable
  • Slide down the notification bar on the phone, where you will see the USB Connected option
  • Click on USB Connected, then click on Connect USB Storage, and click on OK when prompted to turn on USB storage
  • Navigate to the device \Internal Storage\wockets folder

  • On the phone, the wockets data will be stored in a folder on your storage card under " /Internal Storage/Wockets/ ". The folder is named Session<date><time> .

  • Copy this session folder and paste it in the folder that you created on your computer i.e. 0013v1Mar2411

Download Actigraph Data
  • Connect the Actigraph and start the Actilife software - this will open the window shown below

  • Make sure that the device is checked and click on Download

  • Click on Select Download Location and select the folder that you created i.e. Session<date><time> in the previous step as the destination
  • Click on Download All Devices
  • This will download the actigraph data to the selected location in an extension *.agd file
  • Click on File --> Import/Export --> GT3X -> CSV under Raw to Raw

  • Click on Add Dataset and select the *.agd file that you downloaded from the actigraph

  • Click on Convert File
  • Once it is completed, click on cancel
  • Again from the main screen of the ActLife software click File --> Import/Export --> .CSV under Raw to Epoch

  • Click on Add Raw Data File and select the *.agd file that you downloaded from the actigraph

  • Set Epoch Length as 1 sec
  • Check Create CSV
  • Check Steps and Inclinometer
  • Make sure # of Axis is selected as 3
  • Click on Create File
  • Once file is created, close the window
  • Close the ActiLife Software


Annotator Data:
  • Connect the Tablet to the computer via the USB Cable
  • Drag down the notification bar on the tablet
  • Click on USB Connected-Select to copy files to /from computer
  • Click on Mount
  • Once connected, browse to the storage drive of the Tablet from My Computer
  • Browse to the wockets folder
  • Within the wockets folder, will be a folder for each subject
  • Browse to the folder corresponding to the current subject
  • Browse to the latest data session folder. The folder is named as Session-yyyy-mm-dd-hh-MM-SS where the date and time corresponds to the date and time at which the session started
  • Copy the AnnotationIntervals.xml from this folder and place it in the Session folder that you created in the previous steps
  • Once the files have been copied, Click on Turn Off on the tablet
  • You can now disconnect the tablet from the computer

Pre Merger



  • Run the Pre Data Merge software from the computer

  • Click on Browse and select the folder that you created in the previous step i.e. Session<date><time>
  • Select the Date of the session
  • Enter the Session#
  • Enter the Subject#
  • Select Tablet as the annotation, if tablet annotation is present
  • Click on Submit

  • You will see a message saying Completed! once it is completed
  • This will create the folders and files required to merge the data

Merge Data

  • Run the Data Merger Software from the computer
  • A window will pop up that allows you to select a directory

  • Browse to and select the Session folder that you created while downloading the data from all devices i.e. Session<date><time>
  • Start the merging process by clicking on Convert
  • A conversion will appear similar to the one shown below

  • Make a note of any warning messages that might appear
  • Once the merge process is completed click on Done
  • Verify that the software created merged csv files for each of the sensors under the merged subdirectory of the session folder i.e Session<date><time>

View Data

  • Run the Data Viewer software from the computer
  • Click on File --> Open

  • Browse and select the session folder that you created i.e Session<date><time>
  • This will load the data in the visualizer
